Thomas attended Michigan State University, earning degrees in both biological science and criminal justice. He is on the Board of Directors of the Commercial Board of Realtors of Michigan, 2004 Past President, and 2011 President Elect. he is a member of the Michigan Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, International Council of Shopping Centers, Michigan Mortgage Bankers Association, and the Mortgage Bankers of America.
